1947年江西中正大學土木系畢業，1952年清華大學工程力學研究生畢業。1978年任清華大學工程力學系教授，1991年當選中國科學院院士，2003年當選俄羅斯科學院外籍院士。從事高校教育、科研工作62年，目前身體健康，仍在教學科研第一線工作。已培養研究生75名，其中44人已獲博士學位，有2名為中科院院士。 現任國內四所大學名譽教授，九所大學兼職教授。

曾獲國際、國家與部委級獎勵40余 ，其中本世紀以來獲獎有2002年何梁何利基金科學與技術進步獎；2004年全國百篇優秀論文（姜漢卿）導師獎；2004年清華大學首屆（04－05）突出貢獻獎；2004年美國ASME全部刊物系列唯一Melville優秀論文獎；2004年國家自然科學二等獎（ 第二獲獎人）；2004年北京市教學成果一等獎（第五獲獎人）；2005年國家自然科學二等獎（第五獲獎人）；國家級教學成果二等獎（第五獲獎人）。2006年全國百篇優秀論文（馮雪）導師獎；2007年全國十大系列教育英才獎；2008年全國老教授協會科教興國獎；2009年獲周培元力學獎。
